Type 2 in the empty box next to Appendix H2. Type 1 in the empty box next to Appendix H1. On the Table of Contents dialog box, click Options. To apply a heading style, select the text you want to format, then choose the desired heading in the Styles group on the Home tab. Go to the References tab > Table of Contents group and click the icon for Table of Contents.

In the table of contents above, each chapter uses a heading style, so there are four sections.
